Dramatically Enhancing Your Literacy Teaching

Thu 9th Mar 2017
  • Time: Nibbles start at 4:30pm
  • Venue: Waitakiri Primary School
  • Member: $25
  • Non Members: $35

In this session, Dr Viv Aitken will present current research evidence on the benefits of drama for literacy learning in years 1-8. She’ll share some examples from her own practice and introduce some useful picture books and other resources for visual, oral and written literacy. The aim is for everyone who attends to leave with some new ways of thinking about drama and at least one new idea to try out in their own classes – along with the inspiration and information to keep exploring.
The session will be participatory (in a completely non-threatening way) and will suit those who are drama-averse as well as those who already enjoy using drama in their teaching.

Dr Viv Aitken wears a number of hats. She’s currently a senior consultant working with teachers around the country on contracts with Waikato and Massey Universities. Originally a high school teacher in Christchurch, Viv moved on to teacher education as a lecturer and senior lecturer at Waikato
University. From 2014-15 she was Associate Professor and programme co-ordinator for the primary teaching degree at EIT in Hawke’s Bay. As a researcher, Viv has published and presented widely in drama education. Her particular passion is the curriculum integration approach known as dramatic inquiry or Mantle of the Expert and she’s convenor of the Mantle of the Expert Aotearoa website.
